It's been eight years since the Delphos Boy Scout Troop 65 honored one of its own for achieving the highest level in scouting. Kyle, 16, was honored Sunday by his troop, family and friends with the Eagle Scout badge, earned by only about three percent of scouts nationwide. "It is big. It's exciting, too, and it's the end of a lot of hard work," Kyle said. Kyle's greatest project was his Eagle Scout project, where he put in 285 man-hours, four times the required amount, refurbishing a ball diamond at Camp Robin Rogers and building a sand box and a sign at the Arc of Allen County. One thing he's learned through scouting is what it means to be a citizen and an outdoorsman. He also said leadership and group work were important lessons for him. "That's one of the things you learn when you take a long hike together," he said. Kyle's dad, Carl, shared many camping trips with his son during his son's seven years in scouts. "In the beginning, every time we would go camping, it would rain. It almost always stormed, from the very first trip," Carl said. "Today, I couldn't be more proud of him. I'm eager to see what he's going to do next." The Eagle Scout's mother, Sharon, agreed. "I'm very proud of Kyle and his accomplishment in reaching Eagle Scout. I'm sure that it will be very beneficial for him in his future," she said. Kyle plans to stick with the troop by becoming a junior assistant scoutmaster and helping others obtain their Eagle Scout badge. At the recognition ceremony, Kyle was presented with the Eagle Scout badge, medal and sash. "It is an extremely prestigious award for a Scout. Kyle has very good perseverance. He worked through a lot to get the Eagle Scout badge," said Doug Stewart, scoutmaster. "I saw him grow immensely from the time he started scouts until now." Stewart said the requirements to become an Eagle Scout include 21 merit badges in areas like citizenship, family, communications, outdoor skills and leadership. The scout must serve in a leadership role in the troop for six months and must complete an Eagle service project. Stewart said Kyle's project was a huge undertaking. "He saw it through to completion and that is the biggest mark of becoming an Eagle Scout," Stewart said.
