Klondike Derby

This annual event was held at Camp Berry in Findlay on January 26, 2002 and featured 80 sleds from throughout the Black Swamp Area Council.  Delphos raced two of the nine sleds representing the Great Oaks District.  The Thunderboltz Patrol finished in 30th place (4th in the District) and the Polar Bear Patrol finished in 57th place (6th in the District).  Members of the Polar Bear Patrol were Matthew T., Adam W., Elliot M., Josh S. and Shawn H.  Members of the Thunderboltz Patrol were Justin R., Mike S., John F., Josh O., Kyle M. and Michael A.  Even without snow, the boys managed to practice their skills and enjoy themselves.

After the race, the troop set up shelter for a Polar Bear campout.

University of Scouting

This leader training, sponsored by the Black Swamp Area Council, was held 8:00-4:00 p.m. April 27, 2002 at Kalida High School.  See the March 2002 Smoke Signals for more information.  Attending from Delphos Scouting was Kim Antalis, and she says, "I did find it helpful and came back with more fun ideas for my webelo den next year as well as a better understanding of the skills I want to teach my den before they cross over to Boy Scouts.  I highly recommend these training seminars to everyone, especially someone new to a leadership role or someone who is taking on new responsibilities within a pack or troop."

Campout at the Warniment's

This two-day event replaced the District Scout-A-Rama that was cancelled.  Scouts met at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002 at Waterworks Park with a sack lunch.  This activity began with a 5-mile hike from the park to the Warniment's woods; veteran scouts carried backpacks.  The day included campfire cooking and plenty of free time.  It ended with an overnight campout in the woods.  Scouts were dismissed late morning on Sunday, May 5.  Class B uniforms were in effect (green and tan shirts).  Patrols planned, shopped for, and cooked Saturday's supper and Sunday's breakfast.  The Scouts did a great job of clearing the woods to set up individual patrol campsites.

Silver Arrow Trail

Seventeen Scouts and six adults attended this three-day campout and backpacking trip on June 7-8-9 at Shawnee State Park in Portsmouth, Ohio.  The troop left Delphos at 5:30 p.m., and arrived at the park 4 1/2-hours later in the dark.  The Scout caravan consisted of a rented 15-passenger van, two other vehicles, and the equipment trailer.

Those attending will remember setting-up camp in the dark in a parking lot, working hard at carrying backpacks through rugged terrain, drinking lots of water, ticks, and swimming and fishing in the lake.  A pack inspection preceded this trip earlier in the week.

Scouts satisfied rank requirements on this trip, in addition to working towards hiking (one 10-mile hike) and camping merit badges.

Scouts attending were Keith B., Bryan C., Nick F., Cole H., Jarrod H., Shawn H., Tyler H., Jonathon L., Kyle M., Anthony P., Justin R., Josh S., Matthew T., Adam Wa., Andy W., Adam Wo., and Nathan Y.  Adults included Ron Burritt, Doug Ditto, Carl Pohlman, Doug Stewart, Dennis Trentman, and Les Warniment.

Summer Camp

100% Participation - WOW!

Troop 65 Scouts were among the 200 at Summer Camp on July 14-20, 2002 at Camp Berry.  Camp Staff included Scouts Josh O. and Josh S.  We registered for the Lewis Campsite, but were moved to the Orbit campsite upon check-in.  We shared a campsite with a small Lima troop.

Camp fee was $140 due to Treasurer Roger Fuller by May 14, 2002 ($150 if after 5/14/02).  Deadline for first-year scouts was June 1, 2002.  There was a sibling discount of $15 for the second brother in a family and $30 for the third brother in a family.  Scouts were encouraged to use 2001 Popcorn vouchers to help defray the cost.

Meeting time at Waterworks Park was 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14 with things packed and ready to go.  Estimated departure time for camp was 1:30 p.m.  With 100% participation this year, drivers were requested for the ride there and back.

First-year Scouts attended the Baden-Powell Patrol program designed especially for them.  They also had the option to work on one or two merit badges.  Older Scouts

worked on 4 or 5 merit badges.  This number allowed for sufficient free time.  Scoutmaster Stewart had recommendations for merit badges.  For more detailed information, see Camp Merit Badges.  The troop completed an outstanding 55 merit badges with three partials!

Parents Night - Wednesday, July 17, 2002

The evening included a meal in Donnell Lodge, visits to the program areas if interested and a flag retreat for which our Troop was in charge of.  All participants did a fine job.  The campfire program included skits - Troop 65 performed "Weeeeeeeeee".  All those Scouts registered for camp by the deadline were presented with a cap, and Scoutmaster Stewart was presented a jacket for having 75% or higher participation (we had 100%).  The program also included an Order of the Arrow calling out ceremony.  Each Scout in Troop 65 voted for up to five Scouts for Order of the Arrow at the troop meeting May 19, 2002.  Eligible Scouts had to be a registered Boy Scout for at least two years, be at least 1st Class rank, and had attended at least 15 camp-outs.  Congratulations to the five Scouts inducted: Michael A., Keith B., John F., Shawn H., and Kyle M. and adult Ron Burritt.  They joined previously-inducted Order of the Arrow member Scout Josh S.

Conservation Project

A group of Scouts worked to clean out a small ditch running through camp to the lake.  This conservation project was part of the Camping merit badge.  The following Scouts satisfied this requirement: Keith B., John F., Jarrod H., Shawn H., Jon L., Kyle M., Justin R., Matthew T., and Adam Wa.  Good work guys!

Bear Wallow

This three-day campout and hike was held August 2-3-4, 2002 at Bear Wallow in Brown County, Indiana (near Nashville, IN).  We registered to hike the American

Heritage Trail and Flags of the Nation Trail.  However, due to the extreme heat, leadership cancelled the Flags of the Nation trail hike.  The boys were eligible for 4 patches: one for the overnight stay and three for  the trail.  These patches were offered by the hiking location at a cost of $5 each.  Purchase was optional.  Don't forget to check out the Photo Gallery.  This event may be used to satisfy requirements for the Hiking and Camping merit badges.  Coordinator for this event was Les Warniment.

The below information was sent home with Scouts at Summer Camp.  The flier included a permission slip to be completed and returned.

Annual Popcorn Sales

Congratulations on another successful year of popcorn sales for Troop 65.  The goal of the Troop was $3500 in sales.  The Scouts met and exceeded the goal by over 20% to reach a final sales total of $4270 (Show 'n Sell $1378 + Take Order $2892).  Exceeding our goal by over 20%, Troop 65 is one of only 60 programs in the Black Swamp Area Council to achieve this success.  This entitled the troop to an additional $.05 for each container sold or $19.50 (390 containers x .05).

Top Salesmen for the troop were Adam Wa. with $527, Josh O. with $409 and Justin R. with $349.50.  Thanks to all the boys for their hard work and dedication.  The sales of $4270 resulted in an earnings for the troop of $1392.25.

The 2002 popcorn sales ran from November 1-17.  Order forms were to be turned in at the November 17th meeting or turned in to the Meskers before that date.  Prizes should have been noted on the bottom of the form.  Popcorn pick-up was at the Meskers on November 27, 2002 after 8:00 p.m.

Some of the boys learned how easy and profitable it is for Show 'n Sell popcorn sales outside a local business.  It was an awesome way to earn money for the troop, because you made the sale, collected the money, and delivered the product all at the same time.

This year we sold in front of K-Mart in Lima (Allentown Road location) on November 2 and November 3, 2002; and in front of Chief's Supermarket, Delphos on November 9 and November 10, 2002.  Sign-up sheets were made available at the October 20th and 27th Troop Meetings.  Shifts were from 10:00 a.m. to noon, noon to 2:00 p.m. and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  at both locations on all days.  Scouts were asked to sign up for only one time slot until all Scouts who wanted to sell signed up.  Then, first come, first serve.  One adult volunteer was needed per shift also.

Again this year we provided an extra incentive for the boys to earn voucher dollars to use toward any scout related expenses.  The boys earned 25% of the profit that they earned for the troop (i.e. if your scout sold $300, then $100 profit went to the troop and of that, $25 was earmarked for your scout).

Thanks to coordinators Sharon and Carl Mesker.
